I enjoyed series 5, but seies 6 has just started to air in the UK, I have watched the first two episodes and it seems to be a warning to the other actors not to complain. A new scientist appears ready to replace Sam, Teal'cs son is ready to replace Teal'c and the Russians are ready to replace O'Neill should their demands get out of hand. Jonas is new and I'm reserving judgement on whether or not he will fit in, but without the Jack/Daniel banter the two episodes were poor.

I've enjoyed Season Five best out of all the seasons of SG-1 thus far. Looking through the season there were less 'bomb-out' episodes on average than other seasons, and some thoroughly enjoyable stories.

Desperate Measures is playing here right now. I found it so riveting, exciting, engrossing and suspenseful I nipped outside to get a breath of fresh air and spend some quality time looking at all the pretty mountains. Just so I wouldn’t feel I’d *completely* wasted an hour of my life.

I really felt like Season 5 was in a recover stage. From the second Jack, Sam, Teal’c walked through the Stargate in Season 4 to greet Daniel, there was some definite "coldness" in the air. The entire season made me uncomfortable, except for maybe the last few episodes.

Season 5 could have worked. The team I adore so much seemed to be there, but it was like the characters were being held back. There doesn’t seem to be that team interaction anymore. When it comes to dealing with each other, it is like their feelings have been totally turned off. It is almost like one of the members could die and the other team members wouldn’t care. (ah, Meridian comes to mind with that).

I guess I could be considered one of those "new" fans TPTB are always saying they will come up with for season 6. I started watching Stargate SG-1 in January. I was able to watch the first three season shows on a local channel and Season 5 on Showtime. I got hooked on the first three seasons and made sure I taped all of them. I taped some of Season 4 and taped over some of the real stinkers, Chain Reaction, Prodigy, and Point of No Return. Even if you did not have a Episode Guide you could easily tell the difference between the Stargate on the local channel and the shows from season 5 on Showtime. I’ve read much better Fan Fic from amateur writers then what I heard in some of the 5th season eps. So to the TPTB thats one fan gained and lost and it only took a couple months. And for the record I never even heard of Michael Shanks before Stargate but he was one of the main reasons I kept watching. "Ascension" was one I really disliked, too much Carter. "Proving Ground" was boring and who cares about any of those cadets? The show already has a team, write about them. "Summit" and "Last Stand" could have been so much better without the flipping back and forth between the tunnels and the main story. Even when Daniel’s suppose to have a story about him they still have to throw "Carter" in it. It was distracting and added nothing worth anything to the show. MS still did a good job with a lousy script. "Wormhole x-treme!" was just stupid. Martin was annoying and the spoof of the SG-1 team by the other actors was an insult to the fans. If I want Sci-FI cartoons I’ll watch them on Saturday morning. "Meridian" was unbelievable. Killing off a character as well liked as Daniel, trying to push an unattractive, despised alien off on the fans as his replacement was an excellent way to kill off what use to be an excellent show. I will watch any new shows with MS in them but I have no confidence in any of the writers and it would only be MS’s acting abilities that would save the new shows from being a total disaster. Favorite Season 5 shows are "Beast of Burden", "The Tomb", "Menace" and only because of MS would I include "Summit" and "Last Stand".

"Summit" by the author of "Mary Sue Marries Apophis and He Turns Good and They Have Babies"

Daniel had a moral dilemma. He wasn’t sure whether he wanted to pretend to be a slave in order to kill a bunch of evil Goa’uld. He knew it had to be him because he spoke Goa’uld, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to poison all those human hosts. So he had to think about it for at least ten minutes before he said "Okay."

Jacob explained the plan to Daniel. Daniel looked troubled. Jacob said, "If you aren’t 100% committed to this plan, you’d better say so now, cuz once I start I can’t stop!" Wait, that’s my Xena/Gabby fic, forget that last line! Jacob explains that the poison will kill all the Jaffa, too, and Daniel looks troubled and Jacob asks if he’s okay. Daniel thought about it real hard for five whole seconds, then said, "Okay."

Then he saw his bitchy ex-girlfriend and decided that killing all those perfect strangers was bad but he couldn’t kill his ex-girlfriend cuz she’s a babe and stuff. Cuz Sam has the black widow curse, while Daniel has the curse where that cute girl he had a crush on in junior high and the cute girl he used to tutor in high school became Goa’ulds. But it never occurred to any of them that they might run into Sarah/Osiris. D’oh!

Meanwhile, Jack, Sam, Teal’c, and Marty Sam were stuck in these tunnels and they got trapped!!!!!!!

If you want to know what happens next week you’d better send me feedback telling me how good you think my story is!

S5 has been a big disappointment to me and even though I thought it started off well by the end it felt like a big waste of time. There were so many stories to explore and in the end they didn’t really go anywhere with any of them. Tanith was a good character but they killed him off. Orlin was good but he was only in one episode. They killed off Nareem as well who I’ve always liked and was another good character. Then they brought back Martin who is annoying and Jennifer Hailey who is annoying as well. They introduced Elliot and had really three whole episodes mostly about him which felt really pointless and who cares about some cadet and whether or not he wins Jack’s respect or whatever? We had three episodes about Osiris, which means there have been four appearances by her already since The Curse which is just stupid when you think of characters like Catherine who haven’t been seen since 1969 and Arris Bock who was really popular too. She was okay in The Curse but she was bloody awful in Summit & Last Stand & Revelations. It’s good Bratac came back for two episodes and it would have been good Jacob was in the two-parter except they didn’t give him anything to do. Simmons felt like he was in every other episode and the character was totally crap. Maybourne was okay but the episodes he was in weren’t. The Goa’uld on earth guy was terrible and the NID stuff stank up the place. We didn’t get anything about the Ancients or about the Asgard until the last episode and nothing about the Harcesis child or the Nox or the Furlings or anything about that whole Alien Alliance story that is SUPPOSED to be the big storyline.

I look at this way:

Good supporting characters:

APOPHIS - great character and they kill in the first episode! (Good flashback in the next one but so much stuff unresolved between him and Teal’c and him and Daniel it’s crazy!) JACOB - hardly in the episodes he’s in except for "Enemies" BRA’TAC - in two good episodes "Threshold" & "Warrior" TANITH - good character but only really in one episode because they killed him in the next one and the way they did it was really lame as that plot arc had been going for ages and just fizzled into rubbishy CG1 ORLIN - good character but only in one episode NAREEM - good character but only in one episode DAVIS - didn’t seem to have a lot to do either YU - good character played by a good actor but wasted in two crap episodes and didn’t have much to do in the good episode he was in ("Warrior")

middle of the road supporting characters:

MAYBOURNE - don’t like him or hate him but all the episodes he was in were crap - not the actor’s fault though

Bad supporting characters:

ELLIOT - rubbish character in three rubbish episodes and couldn’t have cared less about him in any of them. HALEY - only in one but couldn’t have cared about her either SIMMONDS - awful character who felt like he was in every other episode, was in "Ascension" (so-so) "Fifth Man" (thought it was boring) "Desperate Measures" (terrible) and "48 Hours" (okay) GOULD GUY from "Desperate Measures" - really bad actor - really bad character and in two episodes OSIRIS - used to be a good character but is just embarrassing to watch now - really hammy vampy acting and the character doesn’t convince as a gould ANUBIS - toe-curlingly bad all that ’he’s so bad and evil and wicked’ rubbish like a bedtime story for 5 year olds

JACK-FOCUSED EPISODES - "Red Sky" "Fifth Man" "Beast of Burden" (shared with Daniel) "Wormhole XTreme" (shared with Martin) "Proving Ground" (shared with Elliot)

DANIEL-FOCUSED EPISODES - "Beast of Burden" (shared with Jack)"Menace" "Meridian" (shared with Jonas Quinn)

SAM-FOCUSED EPISODES - "Ascension" "Between Two Fires" "2001" "Desperate Measures" "Fail Safe"

TEAL’C - "Threshold" "Warrior"

EPISODES FOCUSED ON OTHER CHARACTERS: "Rites of Passage" (Janet) "Proving Ground" (shared with Jack) "Summit" "Last Stand" (Elliot)

TEAM EPISODES: (where every single member of the team had something important to do and got some focus) - "Enemies" "Between Two Fires" "The Tomb"

As this is supposed to be a TEAM show and Jack and Daniel are the characters from the original film I think that is a really lousy showing. Elliot got more episodes than Teal’c did and the same amount as Daniel did. They never used to bring back guest characters even if people really liked them, now they bring them back even if they’re hated.

Worst of all has to be Jonas Quinn who was a really dull character and they’re now intending to make the fourth member of SG1! So Makepeace, Martouf, Rothman, Nareem, Sha’re and so on all get bumped off or written out but that tedious little weasel is going to have whole scripts written about him?

Also Teal’c had nothing to do in "Ascension" "Red Sky" "Rite of Passage" "The Tomb" "Desperate Measures" "Wormhole XTreme" "Proving Ground" "48 Hours" "Fail Safe" "Summit" "Last Stand" "Menace" "Sentinel"

Daniel had nothing to do in "Threshold" "Fifth Man" (except talk about freaking Osiris) "Rite of Passage" "Desperate Measures" "Wormhole XTreme" "Proving Ground" "Fail Safe" "The Warrior" "Revelations" (not in it)

They only have FOUR characters to write about and they just ignored two of them for half the season. There’s no reason - except the writers being crap - why everyone shouldn’t have something to do in every episode. Jack should have had something to do in "Summit" and "Last Stand" too. It feels like all the guys ended up playing second-fiddle to Sam this season just because she’s the girl which I’m sorry if I’m being sexist but I don’t see why she should get special treatment just because she’s female. She’s just one of the characters. I like her but I don’t like her any more than I like Teal’c and we hardly saw him the whole season while we couldn’t get away from Sam.

So I thought this season just ended up a mess with too much focus on boring characters, not enough team episodes, nothing like enough Teal’c or Daniel, too much Sam, and not enough going off world either. No wonder Shanks left. What I don’t get is why any of the audience stayed.

Well I can’t say I was very impressed. There was far too much of people running around to no purpose, far too many new characters who were not the least bit interesting, far too much of Sam being in the limelight to no purpose with too much technobabble and killing off of boyfriends and not enough for Daniel to do. Time was Daniel was vital to the team but the way it’s been written for the last two years he isn’t. I’m sure that’s been deliberate. Stories don’t just happen to get written like that and Michael was telling them what was wrong but they wouldn’t listen. The team isn’t a team any longer and Stargate Sg-1 isn’t Stargate Sg-1. I don’t know what they’re up to. Honestly, the way they’re going on you’d think they were double agents from another studio trying to destroy the show. It’s a bit odd that Mallozi who used to write kiddie programmes was hired to write all those episodes and they were obviously written for X Files or some other show. I think he must be working for Paramount or some such place. I don’t know what Brad wright is doing, maybe he’s taking bribes from Paramount because it’s not possible to make so many mistakes, have people telling them what the mistakes are and how to fix them then carry on making them and making more. I am not impressed by this programme any longer. Time was, I was very impressed by it and looked forward to the new episodes. I haven’t taped an episode for months and hubby likes poking fun at it while in the past he used to watch it with me. Having something that was your favourite programme called Stargrate Sg-bomb by someone who used to watch Doctor Who is no joke.

Here are some comments Joe Mallozzi made about Season 5 episodes during a chat with the S/J Horsewomen:

From a production standpoint, which episodes would you like to redo if you had the chance? Well there were certain aspects of certain episodes I would have done differently – given all the time in the world and an unlimited budget. Scorched Earth, Prodigy, and Wormhole Xtreme to name a few. On the other hand, there are a number of episodes I was quite happy with – although there is a vocal contingent that doesn’t necessarily share my enthusiasm for episodes like Desperate Measures, Chain Reaction, Point of No Ruturn and Summit.

The man sounds a little defensive doesn’t he? It’s interesting, the episodes he loves so much (Chain Reaction, Desperate Measures) are the ones that have absolutely nothing to do with the original premise. And, not coincidentally, these are the episodes most disliked by the fans.

If Mallozzi wanted to write conspiracy scripts, he should have gotten a job on the X-Files!

for some strange reason it seemed rather short - the character development was not what it should have been and please - no more sg juniors ! - it’s too painful. speaking of painful - it was traumatic to see the character Daniel Jackson leave - he is so integral and i really do feel that huge chunk of the sg1 team has been hewn out of the solid rock of a cast! i fear that the end is nigh! - maybe they could rent seven of nine now that v has ended or find a male equivalent - but PLEASE don’t promote one of the juveniles - let them continue to do their kleenex and ketchup ads. as for how sg1 is aired and marketed in the uk - the lack of a permanent slot on channel 4 is a travesty! at least sky lets us have it regularly together with healthy chunks of repeats - daniel you were the sanest - the most articulate - sensitive - the best looking (apart from your boss if he lost his gut!) - the most normal and rounded character! - now why are those dvd’s stuck together like that!

In response to the question of when Showtime is finally going to spring us from Season 5 rerun hell...for those of you who don’t already know the new episodes air starting March 8th. Daniel meets his doom on May 3rd.

As for my thoughts on Season 5 in general...there were a small handful of episodes I liked, but for the most part I’ve been disappointed. I thought the whole point of the Gate was to explore other worlds? So why are we spending so much time sitting around on planet Earth??? Been there...seen it...now can we see something else? Don’t get me wrong, I love those Maybourne returns episodes and all, but Stargate meets X-Files is a whole new direction for the show and it will definitely take some getting used to. Haven’t reached that point yet.

Hated, hated, HATED Wormhole Xtreme...BTW.

Hate SG1? If we hated it, why would any of us take even a moment to mourn what’s been done to it over the past two seasons?

Daniel Jackson as a character didn’t make the show on his own and I don’t actually see anyone round here saying he did, but the lack of him in season 6 may well break it.

Thanks for telling me to ’shut up and go away’ by the way, it’s been a while and I was almost starting to miss being told that.

Personally I’d already decided that an SG-1 without Daniel was an SG-1 I didn’t want to watch any more. But that’s *my* choice, because losing Daniel was the last straw for me, not something I’m going to do because someone tells me to shut up and go watch something else.

Hate SG1? Fine. Stop watching. You all are acting like it was one char that made this series. I watched it because it involved something that gave you wonder and awe without all the Startrek and phaser stuff.

So, stop complaining. If you don’t like it. Go watch Andromeda.

I love stargate sg-1. I think the show is great and I haven’t missed a chapter, unfortunately season 5 is quite disappointing especially with Daniel Jackson being killed. Don’t know if you remember but the show was based on his character and on Jack’s character. Killing Daniel is killing the SGC. Please bring him back - it’s just not the same without him! make season 6 the best with his return - it’s possible! Sg-1 always beats the odds!

Hello

Here in Germany «Stargate SG-1» is late in it's 5th season officially. However, I managed to watch the first 7 episodes of 6th season so far using other means than the local tv station. To sum it up: I AM SAD! I'm upset for weeks now. You (the producers of the show) even made my cry. I don't like that.

First of all, I'm sad to see Michael Shanks leaving the show and with him my most favourite character. I'm stonedead certain, you will see a lot more of my fellow countrymen being cross with TPTB once «Meridian» has been aired in Germany for the first time in September 2002. Stargate is (or better: was) very popular over here - as it is in many areas of Western Europe actually. And why is that?

I somehow doubt it is because of the NID/conspiracy episodes or the war with the Goa'uld story arc and the ever increasing use of special effects. Nor was the introduction of gorgeous young ladies like the «Anise» character of any incentive to tune in. Don't get me wrong - my eyes were pleased but if I wanted to see pretty women I'd turn to other places; no offence intended. Just for the record: I'm an affluent young male and therefore well within the targeting group for the advertising industry.

In the beginning I watched the show because I liked the way how the producers/writers handled the transition from the movie to the new series. The Daniel Jackson character was the most likeable in the movie and soon I found myself enchanted with his portrayal by Michael Shanks. RDA was doing fine too but I must admit having had at first doubts about the Sam Carter character. However, these doubts vanished in season 3. Teal'c is a good and honest chap. I would trust him with my life but somehow he isn't going to make me watch the series.

Originally, I tuned in because I knew RDA and Don Davis (never heard or seen any of the other actors before). Furthermore I was intrigued by the show's approach. Using the Stargate to seek out new life and new civilisations in present day circumstances was an idea I was genuinely interested in. In Star Trek, Jean-Luc Picard was my favourite before he changed important parts of his personality with his appearance on the big screen.

I didn't mind, Stargate was US-centered despite its meaning for the whole planet although I wished TPTB would recognize one day the tens of millions of viewers in Europe. There was a charming and educated fellow in the show who spoke his mind when ethics, moral issues and sometimes even basic human rights were in danger of being sacrified for no convincing reason by the military or political leaders respectively.

With Daniel Jackson I could easily identify myself. Over time, when the exploration issue became less and less important I've drawn joy from the writers efforts to develop the four main characters. In over 100 episodes there is a good chance for writers to do so. And they did. SG-1 managed to become part of the family. Of all the possible interactions between the main characters I was most intrigued by the Jack/Daniel bantering.

For me there was nothing improper the way the writers handled the issue. On the contrary, the more militaristic and showmanshiplike the series became after «Small Victories», the more I appreciated the humour shown in the relationships between Jack and his teammates. That is what kept me watching. With Daniel Jackson gone the show has lost it's appeal to me.

When I first learned Mr Shanks was leaving the show I couldn't believe myself I was reacting so emotionally. I tried to calm myself down with the notion that most probably the actor has nothing in common with the character he is portraying. I still think that is utterly true. However, Michael Shanks triggered something and it isn't only because of his good looks. His acting helped a lot to get me growing fond of Daniel Jackson, in fact watching every scene with him in a state of high excitement. That doesn't happen very often with other actors. Other good looking hunks (e.g. Enterprises Ensign Mayweather or Stargates Jonas Quinn for that matter) stand no chance of achieving the same effect so it must be something else.

Perhaps it is the actor after all. I've read quite a number of reports concerning Michael Shanks appearances at conventions in Europe earlier this year. He seems a nice person.

I also read interviews with him as well as with TPTB. My conclusion is that I would probably have done the same as Michael Shanks. Leaving the show was the right thing to do for him. I wish him every luck in the world for his future career.

I would be most happy should he get a leading role in another successful tv series that will make its way to European small screens. Independend Canadian TV-films are not likely to fulfill this wish.

BTW, does anyone know how to contact Michael Shanks or his agent via mail?

Cheerio and Lots of Love

Tristan

PS: I hope it wasn't a ghastly thing to read through this letter. Imagine I would have written it in German. ;))

The writers of the show seem to have forgotten that what makes a show about a team working together so attractive, is the idea of such different people attempting to get along in the name of duty and managing to accomplish both the getting along and their primary goals most of the time. Star Trek series, anyone? Star Wars, FarScape, Angel? Seeing members of a functional group in action has archetypal appeal. Sure, there should be some tension from within the group, that's realistic. But the greatest tension on the show should be coming from without, from the show's main antagonists - the Goa-uld. Remember those guys?

Let's see, WHY are Jack, Sam and Hammond still around? I was in the Air Force, Tours of Duty are only 3 or 4 years stateside and 18 months or 3 years overseas?

Why are they VIOLATING AIR FORCE Regulations, and sending civilians into combat? Season 4 was a dead giveaway, replace them with NEW people being assigned...

Daniel Jackson begged Hammond to let him go, his wife was out there, once she was dead, why didn't he keep him as an advisor as originally stated in the Pilot?

This is kind of like MASH, it lasted LONGER than the KOREAN WAR did!!

Replace Hammond since it's his last tour, and he should have been out in Season 3, which would have been his fourth year.

Season 5 only contradicvted everything prior and even in the own season!!

They don't have a DHD General, which automatically corrects for doppler shift....

Season 1, Pilot - I tried differetn combinations and they didn't work either, Daniel to Carter, I figured the gates were buried or destroyed, maybe the planets move, change....

The knowledge we now have in Season 5, would have let every combination Daniel try with a DHD work.....

In RED SKY, Sam Carter has a brilliant idea, let's send a malp with the Heavy Water to neutralize the atomic mass, and save the planet... We just have to end the wormhole before it reaches the planet....

In 48 HOURS, we are told that when Teal'c is trapped in the GATE, the DHD has a safety protocol and will keep the gate open until the entity comes through the gate....

Why then in RED SKY when they returned to see the results, they didn't come out and trip over the MALP and Jack yell, hey Carter what the hell is this damn MALP doing here, shouldn't it be in the sun?

General Hammond is OVERDUE for retirement, O'Neill and Carter should also be reassigned...

We can easily replace Carter with Lieutenant Hailey(?) I thought when you graduated from college and joined the Air Force, you were a Lieutenant, if you went through ROTC, you were a First Lieutenant, and if you graduated the Academy you were Commissioned a Captain?

Maybe it's changed since I was in, but still....

My MAIN COMPLAINT, all court-martial offenses, when captured by the Goa'uld in ANY episode....

REGULATIONS are REGULATIONS, which Carter jumped all over poor Hailey for in Prodigy, is the ONLY thing you are to give when captured is Name, Rank, Branch of Service and Serial Number......

Why, in Proving Ground does O'Neill jump all over Elliot, NEVER LEAVE A TEAM MEMBER BEHIND!!

Why, in Exodus, last episode in Season 4, did you LEAVE teal'c behind? Colonel, where's Teal'c? I don't know, I think he's DEAD.....

If it was Carter hit by a Staff Weapon, would he have left her?

My BIGGEST complaint with Proving Ground: Hailey was in on it, working for the SGC... SO why did they offer Elliot the spot on SG-17? What is this, help us Hailey and we'll.........

Fill in the blank....

Screw you and not let you join an SG team....

Keep you as the MOLE for all other training exercises....

This is a bunch of CRAP!!

I could also go on about the uniform violations in every episode... Why don't any of the Officers have the blue stripe around the cuff og their Blue Jackets? Why does Major Samuels in the Pilot have Lightning bolts on his brim, that's only for Colonel and above. Why does the person who tells Jack they need to take the second elevator down, have on Lieutenant Colonel Maple Leafs, and Staff Sergeant stripes on his sleeves? Why does Major Kawalski have Major insignia on his Dress Blues, but Captain insignia on his fatigues? Why is the African American Airman on the planet the only one to correctly call him Captain? Why during the briefing do they all have their epelauts on one side over the collar instead of under it? Why on some of the episodes do the airmen outside not have hats on?

This is why these so-called series get bad... They run out of scenarios for the characters. Let's stick a Goa'uld in Sam's head this episode... Now let's do Jack....

Why not REASSIGN them after 3-4 years, get NEW replacements and look, new Characters to write scenarios for....

They stayed together too long, got too close, a real no-no.. Sam cried when Daniel ascended... This is why females should not be allowed in combat, they get too emotionally involved... In Season 4 when Sam and Jack admitted they had feelings for each other.... Time to reassign them...... Separate them.....

That's why they have limits on how long they are stationed together....

Give me command of SG-1, with my Small Arms Marksman Medal, give me Captain Hailey as my 'Carter', and Teal'c, no civilians, with me and Hailey both marksmans, we'd save money on ammunition, one shot will kill the enemy, we both hit what we aim for....

By the way, I'm still trying to figure out how in the pilot and several others, they fire 60-80 rounds of ammo out of 20 round clips on the M16A1, and they seem to fire loads more out of those P90's that look like 30-40 round clips.....

Automatic just wastes ammo, leave it in semi and take one shot. Why not aim for the HEADS, they NEVER have Armor on their faces, one shot between the eyes should kill any of them....

Oh that's right, only myself and Hailey can put a bullet right between the eyes with the first shot.....

Why don't the SG-Teams wear Helmuts, and body armor? Loved the episode season finale of season 5, they get gassed.... Funny, when I went into combat we were trained to get our Gas Masks on in under 15 seconds when we first saw someone succomb to it, the Jaffa went down first, where were the gas masks? Where were the injector modules with the anti-chemical weapon injections?

While were on the subject, isn't Teal'c's symbiot, junior as Jack calls him, supposed to protect him from any of that?

I read where someone said they would only buy Seasons 1, 2 and 3 on DVD.....

Yes, and maybe if they had followed standard Air Force Regulations and gotten new people reassigned, Season 4 and 5 wouldn't have had to resort to comic relief...

Window of Opportunity, do anyhting you want without any consequences...

Point of no Return....

And I can go on and on.....

Give me SG-1, give me Hailey and Teal'c, and let's see how long it takes to defeat the Goa'uld, we could probably do it within one season, then we could go to the other planets/moons, etc., and do some real exploration, etc..

I've been a huge fan since the first season. I haven't seen a new episode all year long. SG1 plays in Toronto Canada every night at 7 p.m. and once a week wed at 10 p.m. but still no new episodes. WHY? Can someone refresh my memory what happens at the end of season 5 please.

What happened to "show, not tell"? What's with all the huge chunks of unwieldly exposition?

Ok. I know this is an unpopular position, but I have to post, if only to drive home how utterly pathetic the past two seasons have been for me.

I watched ’Fail Safe’ last week, and I was practically in tears. My team was together. They were in the same place, at the same time, and no one seemed to be bent on shredding anyone else to pieces (which has been a theme of the past two seasons, you must admit). Did I like the episode? No. It had so many issues/plot holes/inconsistencies that I can’t express them in a coherent manner. However, *EVERYONE WAS TOGETHER*. They were talking to one another, not yelling, ignoring, denigrating, or otherwise pretending that the other person didn’t exist. For that reason alone, I was happy to sit through the episode.

Forget SuperSam. Forget Teal’c-I-Am-An-Eyebrow. Forget Jack-I’m-Really-Dumb-And-Insensitive. Forget Daniel-IFallAsleepInHarrowingSituations. They were all in the same place at the same time, and seemed to know each other (I think they’ve had their minds wiped for most of season five, and the less said about season four the better). For no other reason than the fact that they didn’t hate each other in this episode, I love it. How pathetic is that? How far has the team strayed from Seasons 1 through 3 that I would look upon this as an episode worth rewatching?

Let me just state for the record. I love RDA. I’ve watched some pretty pathetic movies-of-the-week, simply because he was in them (Yes, PTB, I find RDA very attractive, In fact, I think that his going grey has made him more attractive than ever). However, I consider the so-called ’character progression’ of seasons four and five to be an insult to both RDA and the character of Jack O’Niell (Seasons 1-3). He’s become an idiot-cum-insensitive jerk, where once he was an intelligent, caring gentlemen who’s first instinct was to *protect*. The way he’s been written in the last two seasons, he’s a disgrace to the uniform and I wouldn’t trust him to protect my lunch, never mind the earth. He’s become a caricature of the colonel I’d come to love.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure about Sam at the beginning of the first episode (That whole "My reproductive organs might be on the *inside*" line, I mean, really, who wrote that?). I’m a professional woman, and one thing I’ve never understood is the women who feel they have to be more ’male’ than the man in the office next to them. Personally, I have no use for that. But Sam became this wonderful, fully realized character, full of warmth, humor and intelligence. And AT portrayed her beautifully, as a competent, fully female and competent character. I’d grown to *love* Carter. She was completely feminine, but also completely competent, intelligent and capable. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that AT is a very beautful woman. But early in season 4, she started to look like she’d been sucking too many lemons, and I came to realize it was the scripts. They labotamized the character in season 4, then turned her into TechnoGirl in season 5. *SIGH*.

Teal’c. What a wasted opportunity. He started out as a character who made the best of a bad situation. He was ready to sacrifice himself (note to the writers, *himself*), on the slight possibility it could someday bring his people freedom. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure he was going to be a regular character, but based on the character and CJ’s portrayal, I was sure hoping that he would be. I liked him. I *really* liked him. He had strength, caring, nobility. And yes, PTB, CJ filled out those Jaffa-threads in a very satisfying manner. But that isn’t the important part to me. I’ve grown to love the wisdom, strength and loyalty of the character, and I love that Teal’c is always there for the team. He’s the pillar upon which the rest of the team depends. I’m sorry that he was non-existent in season 4, and is being used as alien-comic-relief in season 5. CJ and Teal’c both deserve better.

Daniel and MS. Jeez. What can I say that hasn’t been said better than I could ever express? MS has made the character his own, expanding upon the character from the movie (The only one I liked, wholeheartedly). Daniel is the reason I tuned into SG-1 in the first place. I didn’t much like the Jack character, until the very end of the StarGate movie, so it wasn’t Jack that made me watch the pilot episode. Daniel is kind and caring. He’s pretty much the representation of all that is best about the human race, and he’s become quite competent over the length of the series. The other characters (used to) trust him implicitly. Why couldn’t the writers bring him into the whole ’earthbound-conspiracy’ arc? Even if he isn’t military, he is a student of history and human nature, so I don’t buy this whole mullarky about him having nothing to add to the NID storyline. I mean, if nothing else, he is a genius, isn’t he? You aren’t going to forget about that, are you? You’ve changed so many other elements of Stargate history and continuity, I shouldn’t be surprised you’ve completely missed/ignored this. I mean, I don’t consider myself the most cerebral of television watchers, but give me a break! What is your collective IQ? So there you go, PTB. I find that even with a very attractive cast, the show is lacking. I won’t bother with season 6, and I’m not sure if I can stomach the end of season 5, although I will try. I love the characters who are SG-1, and I’ve come to love the actors who portray them. However, I find the writing to be sincerely lacking. What does that mean to you? To me, it means that I don’t care what ’good-looking, well-known hunk’, you bring into the cast. It isn’t enough for me. The crap you’re pushing isn’t the wonder I fell in love with. I feel bad for RDA, AT and CJ. I even feel bad for CN. I’m sure he’s going to get a lot of flack for the character of DumbAss (Oh, I’m sorry. I meant Jonas). I just want CN to know, it isn’t him, so please don’t take any of this personally. It’s just that the writers have really let the fans down in the past few seasons.

-mishel

BTW - I bought Season 1 on DVD. I’ll buy Seasons 2 and 3 as well, but I won’t bother with anything else. I know I’m not in your ’target demographic’, but I just thought you should know.

Does anyone know when Showtime will air the episodes that come after Wormhole X-Treme? That was the last new episode I saw on that channel. Has Stargate SG-1 gone to another channel (which channel), or have I just missed the newer episodes?

In response to the previous post...

All the people who’ve posted to this guestbook or who’ve written so eloquently about their feelings for the show as it is now and as it has been in the future have done so because they care about the show. Because they respect the actors and the people behind the scenes as well. Otherwise why would we post at all?

Fans themselves don’t have the power to make or break a show, that’s down to TPTB. They’re the ones who push a particular line or choose to follow a particular path and sometimes that choice backfires.

What we *do* have as fans is the right to express an opinion - that opinion doesn’t have to be 100% positive all the time in order for us to somehow ’prove’ we are ’true fans’. Anyone who tells you otherwise has an agenda of their own.

Some people like to watch TV and take everything in, not giving it a second thought. I haven’t met many people who watch Stargate like that, mostly because (particularly in earlier seasons, but also in some episodes of late) there’s too much to allow for that couch potato attitude.

I’ve already posted here on the subject of season 5. On why I’ve been so frustrated because of the absolute brilliance of some episodes in comparison to others. I can honestly say of the 22 episodes this season I have wholeheartedly enjoyed about 6 or 7. The rest have ranged from mediocre to downright poor.

That’s no criticism of the wonderful actors, the talented directors and the people who make the sets or costumes. Choices were made, decisions taken, SG changed.

As I’ve said elsewhere, I really hope that the people who watch season 6 get what they want. Heaven knows the rest of us haven’t.

Season 5 was definitely the weakest - I’m having great difficulty remembering individual episodes, and I’m still trying to get my head around the finale. I’m gutted at the loss of Daniel Jackson - there can be no acceptable character written in to replace him; half of me is glad that there will be no more after season 6 (if I watch it all), because Daniel was the soul of the show. Thank you MS for making Stargate SG1 the best ride in the fair.

PS to the immediately preceding post. One thing I wanted to add (but had to rush off to cook dinner): There should have been physical contact, for crying out loud. It’s the one thing we don’t get in this show lately. Understandably no one wanted to touch Daniel in the infirmary because it would have been too painful for him. But in Jack and Daniel’s goodbye sequence, why not? Maybe you can’t touch something that’s not really there but the sequence called out for it and its power was diminished by the absence of touch, something that even Jack would have been able to do in those circumstances (thinking of Serpent’s Lair here). It’s cathartic. Can’t figure out this lack, especially in an episode that was otherwise so moving.

Spoilers ahead; don’t read these comments if you’ve not seen Meridian. I’ve just finished watching it. I expected one (awful) thing and found something completely different. Very, very painful to watch, but not what I expected. I think that this may have been one of the best Jack/Daniel episodes on the series, to be honest. Having watched this relationship develop for five years, there is one thing you always know: Jack has trouble expressing his feelings, but his face, his body language, his expression, the tone of his voice (it gets very, very low and hesitant when strong feelings are locked up and trying to express themselves) shows what he is thinking, and that holds true in Meridian for his words and actions--first in defense of Daniel and then as he was saying goodbye. The way the whole team, including Janet, Jacob, and Hammond didn’t even question or blink at the apparent psychic link between Jack and Daniel says a lot about the relationship. There was more sensitivity in this show than I’ve ever seen. I was SO glad to see Sam’s apparent affection for Daniel be expressed so well: "You have an effect on people, Daniel...You changed me." Her desperation to save him was painful to watch. Amanda T did a fantastic job with this; I suddenly remembered how much I loved her character the first three years. And Teal’c coming with a shabti figurine that Daniel had given him--here’s the sort of tie-in with Egyptian culture that we often miss. Christopher Judge does what RDA does: he says much with an expression and a minimum of words. That’s his character, and he plays Teal’c to perfection. The final sequence between Jack and Daniel was wrenching; Jack and Daniel were both hurting and Jack’s eyes looked haunted. Jack’s "See you around" echoed the way the movie ended. I guess we should hope for the best: let’s not forget that Daniel came back the last time Jack said those words in farewell. Wow. TV doesn’t often have strong writing like this; guess I’m sort of shocked because we’ve not had this on Stargate for a while. Before watching this episode I was irritated that they would add Jonas in the same episode they killed Daniel, but they’re not really showing Jonas in a good light. He’s sort a flea, isn’t he? I’m hoping he will go away. I’ll probably resent him if I end up watching Season 6 out of morbid fascination with the hope that Daniel might return. And yes, I’ve not been happy with Season 4 (to put it mildly, I watched most of those episodes in absolute shock). Could Meridian be an attempt to put it back together? If not for Season 6, maybe for the movie? Just think, Daniel is out there continuing his journey. He’s learning to value himself at last. I don’t know who wrote this episode; haven’t had time to check, but whoever did it has sensitivity for the story and the characters. If I watch Season 6 it will be in the hopes that MS and the PTB’s will work something out: what a reunion episode that could be, don’t you all think so? I’m hoping we see Daniel around, a lot. Sometimes there is this tiny bug in the back of my head that says things like this: "just trust the writers, it will be OK; after all, they did give us this show in the first place...everyone makes mistakes from time to time, even the writers...they probably know this but it will be hard to fix...they’ll fix the current impasse: just look at Meridian..just trust RDA, he likes shooting stories with MS." I hope it’s not all just wishful thinking.

Stargate consistently makes me laugh, smile, lose myself in an alternate reality for an hour.... Meridian was the first every episode that made me cry (and I *don’t* cry easily) beautifully done and afitting goodbye to a popular character who will be missed. We got the chance to say goodbye to Michael at SG4 this weekend - more tears and lumps in throats!

That said I look forward to what S6 might bring, interested to see if the writers can rise to the challenge of portraying the effects of losing Daniel on each member of the team... please don’t ignore it guys!

Personally I have really liked the later seasons and the development of the characters - not that keen on the whole NID thing, but I do love Maybourne! We do need more off world action next season.. and please wrap up the threads and introduce us to the ancients (if we havn’t met them already that is)

Thank you and goognight Mullie and Mollozzi!Just wait until the few viewers they have left (if any) get a look at season six. What the HELL happened to this show...I’m all psyched for season 5, and it did start with a bang, Beast of Burden and Between Two Fires are as classic as anything in the first few seasons...then we get utter BS like Desperate Measures, Ascension and Wormhole X-treme. I’ve been waiting months for new episodes on Showtime, so I’ve been downloading them from Europe...and what a waste of hard drive space...Fail Safe, Proving Ground, Summit...all crap, no other way to say it. They’v killed any reoccuring character worth caring for (except maybe Bra-tac and Zelmac\Jacob) and replaced them with cardboard cutouts more appropriate on the A-team than SG-1...I don’t blame Michael Shanks for leaving, though I hope he reconsiders and tries to help salvage this once noble series. The writers need to be locked in a room w/ the original movie and the first 3 seasons of the show to get to know WHO the characters ARE!!! Please, Please, PLEASE save this show before its hopelessly lost to mediocrity. A devoted and sickened fan.

Season five? The good ones, Beast of Burden, menace, the Tomb (just the first bit).. A couple of other good bits all the rest, rubbish. Wormhole x-treme was the worst episode of any t.v. show ever!!!If thats the best your new writers can come up with its no wonder you lost Michael and with him most if not all of the fans.

I think series five in general was good...and the plot based episodes which focus on the upcoming war and the replicators were good. I think though some of the other episodes are concentrating too much on the characters. Like I think Jack is great but they are writing the show round stuff like his funny way of doing things or Sams unstopable genius. They eed some new blood in there thats all I think and not as much to replace who is there but more to suppliment them. And has anyone else noticed that fact that they have killed of all of Sams love interests.

to sum it up in few words, without Micheal Shanks, and with Joseph Mallozi and co. im starting to sing """things can only get worser..""" come on bring back the show we all loved (season 1/2) and take this inferior product back to the cleaners, before it is completely smeared in crap.

On viewing earlier seasons over and over, during and throughout season 5 something was missing. The reason for stargate started around Daniel Jackson, and now that element has gone, it’s just not going to cut it anymore. and no offence to P Mullie And J Mallozzi but they have literally slaughtered the show. Teal’c has become a walking Q&A trivia person, Jack’s lost aobut 5000 brain cells, and fondly adopted the use of the phrase "rat bast##rd" (why i ask?) the NID/conspiracy/russian plot is turning into the forefront of the show, the support acting is getting worse, and the whole feel of the show has just gone, I also felt that Meridien was to put it bluntly not so good, Oma wasn’t as convincing as previous episodes, and Corin nemec’s character was about as convincing as a dodo. Then there’s the recycled plots in season five, i mean get back to the quality of season 1 & 2, it’s no wonder us hardcore fans are feeling gutted, as the show is going further downhill than we expected. Okay im still a fan but it’ is nowhere near as exciting waiting for the next episode. i could go on forever .....just dont’ get me started on wormhole x-treme.

Season 5 started out fine but then we got a stretch of terrible episodes like Desperate Measures and Wormhole Extreme. Also, it became obvious over time that Daniel and Teal’c weren’t considered main characters. They are just part of the scenery now. They have been dropped and the writer’s own creations have moved in and taken over along with Super Sam. This year has confirmed what I thought was happening, that Sam was being pushed forward at the expense of Daniel. I read the Sci fi channel have a lot of female viewers. Perhaps they thought the audience wanted a female lead? MGM had a deal with them for a certain number of episodes so it could be that they thought making Sam more prominent would be a good thing. I don’t think that they really know who the stargate audience is. They seem to think we are girls who are happy so long as the show has "handsome hunks" and that we’ll accept movie rip-offs and not notice. Maybe they think we’re all too stupid to see what’s happening as they kill the show or simply not discerning and will watch any old rubbish. The standard of writing for the series has definitely dropped and I think people’s expectations have too. I don’t even recognise these characters anymore so I’m not even going to bother watching Meridian. What would be the point when it just means the series will be losing the one thing that has kept me watching all this time, through awful episodes? Michael Shanks had the right idea to leave when he could. He can do better than this and so can I as a viewer. I just don’t think some of these writers can!

I think the thing that has annoyed me the most about season 5 has been its inconsistency. I mean, one minute we have episodes that would sit well with the best ever made (I’m thinking of ones like ’Between Two Fires’, ’48 Hours’ despite its tendency towards revisionist history, ’The Warrior’ and ’Menace’) but at the same time we then get episodes that frankly suck (’Fail Safe’ and ’Wormhole X-treme’ being the first that jump to mind).

How can one show produce both classic thought-provoking sci fi packed with original ideas all done in that unique Stargate SG-1 way and utter pathetic drek ripping off action movies? It just doesn’t make sense.

If it was consistently good, I believe MS wouldn’t have walked. If it was consistently bad I think the show would have/should have been canned by now. This up and down stuff just puzzles me more and more.

I mean, you can either do the job or you can’t? And if you can’t, if episodes like ’Fail Safe’, possibly one of the few episodes I’ve seen universally panned by *all* sections of the fanbase are anything to go by, then do us all a favour and quit!

We know it isn’t the actors - we’ve seen season upon season of evidence that they can produce the goods. So it has to be the scripts, simple as that. Even the best actor can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear, or a good episode out of poorly-paced derivative crap.

We know who the weakest link is. Time for them to walk, I think.

Season 5 has been... let’s just say ’not up to standard’ Okay, we’ve had Enemies, Threshold, Beast of Burden, The Warrior and Menace. That’s 5 episodes out of, so far, 18 that have kicked *ss!!

Then we’ve had the not so good ones which basically encompass... well, all the rest. Please?!!! What happened to my sg-1? All I’m getting now is glimpses of a great past and the occassional emotion between characters. And I don’t mean goo-goo eyes between Jack and Carter or anyone else in the main team! That’s just not right. They’re like family, don’t have *any* romance or it kills the whole show!

Some suspense would be nice. It would be great if it wasn’t obvious where the story was going sometimes.

And I know TPTB thought Summit and Last stand would be good... nuh-uh! Okay, lots of Goa’uld, could be cool, but they didn’t do very much. Nice to see Osiris again, but any kind of dramatic reunion between him/her and Daniel was brought to an end rather quickly with the ’convenient’ drug thing Daniel had in his ring. And no emotion whatsoever from the rest of SG-1 about Daniel’s safety. It was like they didn’t care. I know they do, so what was going on there?

And we’ve lost the Tollans. I may not have liked them but it was nice to have them around, just in case. The Tok’ra have been basically wiped out. The Asgard are busy, we’ve never met the Furlings and the Ancients are off doing the ghost thing.

We’ve got no help anymore! Not that we were getting much, but with all the good recurring characters getting killed off and new OC’s coming in that everyone hates...

Cadet Hayley should be zatted three times. Urgh!

We still have Bra-tac and Jacob though. At least that’s something.

C’mon TPTB! We know you can do better than this!

well i have been getting eps. from the UK and downloading and i got to say not to thrilled with the show i want to know what happend with DANIEL becoming the popular wallpaper and SAM all of sudden became the person who started the program, forgive if i am wrong here but wasn’t it daniel who opened the gate??? and another thing getting tired of her saving the day, her technobabble is getting so old to listen to ’fail safe’ can’t watch that it turns my stomach so bad!! ’proving ground’ yea who wrote that one, ’last stand and summit’ were good ones so far, ’48 hours’ was good to a point the doctor in there to obnoxious, but liked the negotiations part!!! waiting now for the rest, i could comment on the first part but ’beast of burden’, ’enemies’, threshold were possibly my favs and ’the tomb’ parts of it!!

but season 5 does not rate up there as fav season so far :(

My view?

In season five, I don’t recognize the team anymore. Jack’s a dunce, Sam’s become SuperSam--Savior of the Universe, and Daniel and Teal’c just hang out in the background and answer direct questions. No one seems to care about anyone else enough to actually *talk* to each other or show any emotions.

In addition, the storylines feel recycled. In season 5 we’ve seen reworked (but not by much!) versions of Groundhog Day, The Abyss, Armegeddon, Enemy Mine and every Western cliche ever used in a film...everything *but* Stargate the movie. Some of the stories have even been interesting--but it really feels like the writers are writing something they need to get out of their system, and then forcing the SG-1 characters into the rolls needed rather than writing stories for the characters they’ve got.

The only way to save Stargate SG-1 is to take a good hard look at what went wrong in seasons 4 & 5 and then look at what was right in seasons 1, 2 and 3--especially 3-- and write some good quality stories. And LET the characters care about each other!

It’s very disheartening Kelly

"Enemies," "Threshhold," and "Beast of Burden" kicked ass! In fact, the first half of season five was pretty darned good.

How the heck can Sam be gone for 48 hours and no one notice in "Desperate Measures"? You’d think Janet and Cassandra would notice; they’ve established Sam and Janet hang out.

"Red Sky" just had a lot of bad Trek science. Treknobabble and false dilemma. *yawn* NO more puzzleboxes, please. Bor-ring.

More Daniel! And I really grok the incredible shrinking uniform. It would be nice if he had actual lines, too. I don’t just love him for his body. ;-)
