Thought of the Day for TPTB
The Human Element by JayEm Oh, and don't the season six spoilers look exciting? Jack as willing Tok'ra, no Daniel except as a possible dream, possible ghost unable to do more than talk his friend through repeated torturous death? The man - the *ethicist* - responsible for Daniel almost dying accused of a treasonous act now on the team and accepted in Daniel's place with no qualms at all, and everything apparently hunky-dory in SG-land. So kewl. NID conspiracies all over the place and no Jack to be seen as Teal'c, Sam, and Jonas save the day. Oh, yeah.that's the SG1 I know and love. Or not. My hope that the new season would be handled at least with some measure of tact and sensitivity toward what the fans who have already lost so much has been ground under the dust of Mr. Wright and Mr. Mallozzi's almost desperate enthusiasm that we just for-crying-out-loud like their new product. All but the Michael Shanks groupies of course, who we all know have no mind of their own - though they were protesting in every available forum from almost the beginning of season four. Well, gee, guys.I have got a mind of my own. I defended you faithfully when it seemed that things were heading down a road I had every confidence would be handled maturely and effectively then things would get back to SG1's normal state of intelligent entertainment. Boy, was I wrong. Once out of the box it should never, in my considered, and unaffected by the cerulean haze opinion, been allowed out of. By introducing the ship factor you robbed us of the team element. Where previously all parties, genres, fans could project to their heart's content, you polarized them. There was no comfort zone left for any of us. And there still isn't. The few forums claiming peaceful co-existence have simply managed to bully away all others when you weren't looking so it all appears so completely peaceful when you drop by to grace them with your presence. A presence that has, again in my UBTCHO (unaffected by the cerulean haze opinion), contributed to the problem. But back to the new, best season ever and it's 'fresh' new direction. I've said this before and I'll say it again, the loyalty you expect from your audience extends in both directions. There's a saying where I come from 'dance with the one who brought you to the dance' - but you aren't. You've gone to the dance and changed partners, leaving the one that brought you not only to dance alone but also to find their own ride home. You have disowned us and made it quite clear you don't need us anymore as you and MGM build the franchise you could have had these entire five years. *Now* when you've shoved us, the team, and one of the major attractions the show had out the door, you want a franchise. Too little too late, guys. I hope those teenagers have more money than we do because we'd have made you rich. Look at this group. Women yes, but women with money.and in a lot of cases no one else to spend it on but themselves and whatever strikes their whims. Their whims encompassed SG1 as it existed previously - and you threw them away for a bunch of teenagers with fluctuating hormones, allowances, and moods. We gave you five years, think they'll hang in there just this last one? Good luck. I work with kids this age, most of them can't keep interest in one girl an entire year much less a show with kewl explosions and no heart. You misjudge them as greatly as you misjudged us. And in the So your dream team consists of Teal'c, the alien, Sam, the former blended Tok'ra with magic powers of goa'uld detection and super strength to fight off those pesky drugs, Jonas, super-Evelyn Wood graduate who reads all Daniel's books and can magically do and be all he was after we saw precisely what kind of character he displayed in Meridian. And that brings us to Jack - our everyman, our human connection, and the last remaining fully human member of SG1. At least until Abyss. The charm and the connection for us in SG1 was that these were largely modern day humans going out and doing fantastic things while still remaining in touch with their humanity. But you've taken that all way now and as much as I adore the general and Janet, they cannot carry the human element on their own. These are no longer the people we knew and loved, they barely act like they know each other these days, and in season six, with so much altered, you expect us to believe that they will be the same? Ohhh, that's right. Not the same. Better. Kewl. Rockin' explosions and mutant-X rip-offs, among others, and hey, you aren't trying to keep us happy anymore anyway, are you? We are, after all, a vocal minority/contingent, with no opinions of our own and no power in your orderly universe. Silly me, I forgot. Must have been the cerulean haze...or maybe it was the human element. (c) 2002, JayEm. All right recognised. No copyright infringement intended. |
