Airbrush History! by Alison

MGM and the Stargate producers generously acknowledge and celebrate Dr. Daniel Jackson's contribution to the magic of "Stargate SG-1" in its 100th episode celebration featurette on DVD volume 19.  It's really kewl!

And that's ALL folks!  These are individual *frames* from the DVD.  Literally.  Not scenes.  Not moments.  Individual frames.  Dr. Daniel Jackson got seven frames out of a celebration of the history of "Stargate" lasting about seven minutes.  Daniel.  You know?  The man who OPENED the Stargate.   There could be eight frames: we think there could be one of Daniel's hand.

Oh, and in the last picture, actor Michael Shanks, who portrayed Dr. Daniel Jackson for five years, got to tell us this in his few seconds of dialogue: "The SG-1 team is kind of like a little family."

MGM managed to airbrush Daniel right out of Stargate history and together with Brad Wright, gave us 'Samgate' instead.  We know we've mentioned this featurette in another editorial (Who WAS that guy in the glasses?), but thanks to the purchase of new screencapping software and the sheer pettiness and small-minded malice of the people responsible for producing this alleged celebration we were drawn to it again.

Seriously, folks, this is IT.  Seven frames I could actually pick out from the montages.  Seven solo seconds or so.  Maybe.  Some of these I *really* had to be looking for in the montage.  Anyone remember that annoying Marty from "Point Of No Return"?  His character got to have dialogue in several scenes with Jack.  Daniel is in the team shots, of which there are a fair few.  He's not what you'd call obvious in them, but he is there.  Daniel certainly did get a few shots in the '100 episodes' frames montage right at the end: standing with Jack and Catherine at the wormhole, at the quantum mirror, in his robes for Sha'uri's funeral, on the balcony in "The Light".   There might be more, but those are the ones I actually saw.

For Daniel Jackson, the man who opened the gate, the man whose history made this show possible and whose contributions made the Stargate programme viable.  Seven damned frames you can actually see, one of which is the back of his head.  Eight if we count the frame we think is Daniel's hand.  If there are any more shots of Daniel than this, then they passed me by so quick I didn't see them.  I blinked and missed them.  Literally.

As a result of Daniel's actions and Daniel's actions alone:

The Earth is saved 4 times
Another world/members of another world are saved 8 times
The lives of the entire team are saved 8 times
And as for the time he saves the lives of the other members of the team individually (not counting the eight 'team saves' cited above)
Jack - 6 times
Sam - 5 times
Teal'c 3 times
Himself (all on his own without and assist from any members of SG-1) 5 times (even though I haven't listed it in the previous tally I'm counting the recollecting his marbles in Legacy).  -- PhoenixE.

Fans shouldn't have to freeze frame their way through the celebration featurette to even find Daniel!

Oh, and let's not forget that one line of dialogue for Mr. Shanks, who worked his ASS off for five years to make Daniel the beloved and phenomenally popular character he truly is.

All of which pretty much sums up just why we're so mad at MGM and the producers.

"The SG-1 team is kind of like a little family."  Michael Shanks, who didn't attend the party at which his 'contribution' of five years was so joyously celebrated.  Golly.  One wonders why he wasn't camped out for tickets for this particular viewing.  Not ONE single damned scene for Jack and Daniel, the heart of the team dynamic, the reason most of us watch.  Too busy giving us those ten Sam and Jack scenes, huh, Brad?

Considering that Daniel was one of the original characters from the Stargate movie (“So I didn’t just dream that?” Shanks mutters, wistfully) you’d have thought that his decision to leave would have caused a bit more of a stir [with MGM and the rpoducers]. Far from it. “The bottom line is that my leaving the show didn’t seem to faze them at all. After five years, it was, Well, take it or leave it... if you wanna go, there’s a door, don’t let it hit you on the ass on the way out’. That was the part that was the most hurtful; that nobody came to ask why. Certainly nobody came to try and talk me out of it.”

Hmm. Sounds a bit odd, we point out. “You think it’s odd from your perspective?” he chuckles, raising his eyebrows. “From my own, being in the inner workings and knowing exactly how much I had contributed to the show, it was the most shocking thing in the world, and all the more a slap in the face.” -- Michael Shanks, SFX #90, May-02.

Mr. Shanks, we can feel the love from MGM.  For a little compare and contrast, check out what the FANS think of Dr. Daniel Jackson's contribution to Stargate.
