Richard Dean Anderson (best known to fans of Stargate SG-1 as the sarcastic Colonel Jack O'Neill) is among the stars making an appearance in the new season of The Simpsons, says TV website The Futon Critic.
Fans of the show will know that one of Anderson's previous characters, MacGyver, is an object of obsession for two recurring characters in The Simpsons - Marge's sisters Patty and Selma. RDA will, however, play himself in this episode, which sadly is not due to air in the US until late March 2006.

It's come to the site's attention that someone(s) are apparently so threatened by Michael Shanks' entry on the Inside TV Hottest Male list that they appear to be making a Herculean effort to vote him out of the running. Our Stargate regulars have taken note of a steady increase in negative votes over the past two days at a regular time, indicating a probable conspiracy since the other gentlemen on the list aren't enjoying, ahem, such decline. Almost like old times, eh? ;-)
We're betting Inside TV will be most pleased with all those ad impressions...
Overnight ratings just in for the season premieres of Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica on July 15th mean that the Sci Fi Channel 'reasserts its dominance on Friday nights', says a press release from the channel.
Stargate SG-1 picked up 2,610,000 viewers (2.1HH), up 5% on the viewing figures from January's mid-season premiere episode, while Stargate: Atlantis followed on with an impressive 2,783,000 viewers (2.2HH) - up 6% from the show's January figures. The Battlestar Galactica premiere went on to rack up ratings of 3,053,000 viewers (2.6HH), making it the highest rated episode for that show to date.

Cinescape Online Reviews Stargate SG-1's Season 9 premiere, Avalon Part 1 and finds it to its liking.
Could it be that one series has actually learned from the mistakes of another? On April 15, 2001, THE X-FILES aired an episode called "Empedocles" that seemed set to create a new mythology for the Doggett-Reyes era of the series. Abandoning the alien trappings of previous seasons, the story concerned the disappearance of Doggett's son and Reyes's expertise in demonology and the occult. The two notions combined to form a perfect engine that would have easily drive the show in new directions for a number of years to come. Sadly, Chris Carter and company seemed to consider "Empedocles" merely a monster of the week story and Doggett and Reyes were forced to trudge along in Mulder and Scully's footsteps to the detriment of the franchise. Now, STARGATE SG-1 seems poised to explore another mythology in the wake of Anubis's fall.

TV Guide Online has reviewed the premiere episodes of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis (and Battlestar Galactica, too, for those who are interested -- several SG-1 alumni feature in the show) in their "Watercooler" section.
For Stargate SG-1: Replacing the beloved star of a long-running series is always tricky (remember Mayberry RFD? AfterMASH?), but SG-1 shrewdly dealt with the departure of Richard Dean Anderson by dividing his Jack O'Neill in two. New Stargate chief Gen. Hank Landry (Beau Bridges) embodies O'Neill's craggy crankiness ("I like yelling at people!") while Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) provides the deadpan heroics. Pardon the sacrilege, but I think the show is better for the change. Read the rest here.
For Stargate Atlantis: Look out! Here comes the Daedalus! Granted, the idea of James Joyce's spiritually obsessed alter ego coming to aid the embattled garrison of Atlantis is a really weird idea. I suppose that's why the Atlantis writers didn't think of it. This Daedalus is actually an überpowerful Stargate command warship. Its mission: eradicate the besieging hive ships of the cadaverous Wraith and save the Atlantis folks. Read the rest here.
The Sci Fi Channel is offering to fly one lucky person and their guest to Vancouver, where they will become a walk-on extra in new episodes of Stargate SG-1 or Stargate: Atlantis - you could get the opportunity to hand a coffee to Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) or the chance to offer to lend Major Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) your comb!
For more details on the competition, which is sadly only open to Stargate fans in the US, visit the Sci Fi Channel website.
Both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis caught the eye of the nominations panels for this year's Emmy awards, each show picking up a slot for creative categories - both shows get the nod for Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series, SG-1 for the episode 'Reckoning Part 2' and Atlantis for 'Rising'.
Meanwhile, Atlantis also gets an unexpected nomination for Outstanding Main Title Theme, a choice that seems more than a little ironic in a week when it was announced that the title sequences for both shows would be cut down to 10 seconds.

James Spader has landed a much-deserved Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance on Boston Legal. Spader's co-star William Shatner also gets another Outstanding Supporting Actor nomination - both will doubtless be hoping for a double success after picking up the awards last year for their performances in the same roles on The Practice.
This year looks like being a tougher contest, as Spader goes toe to toe with Ian McShane (Deadwood), Hugh Laurie (House), Hank Azaria (Huff) and Kiefer Sutherland (24). The winner will be announced August 27th, 2005.

Tuesday, August 9 at 10 pm ET the much missed Boston Legal starring James Spader (much loved around these parts for his former role as Stargate's original Daniel Jackson) and William Shatner is returning to ABC in the US! ABC hasn't released any details about the episode that will be shown yet but seem to be indicating that it might be one of the episodes that was left unshown at the end of last season when they pulled it off the air (in spite of good ratings) in order to replace it on Sunday nights with a mid-season replacement (Grey's Anatomy).
The ABC website promises some details are coming soon, so check there for updates.
The Los Angeles U Daily News apparently has a thing for the "babes" on science fiction shows. Since The SciFi Channel seems to have taken the approach of promoting that aspect of their three top science fiction shows this season in order to garner media attention, I suppose it's to be expected, although you have to wonder why after mouthing platitudes for so long about how many female viewers their channel has, SciFi would go so far out of their way to now insult and alienate said female viewers of these shows ...
In any case, the U Daily News says ...
Friday on the Sci Fi channel is either for watching babes or some pretty good shows - "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate Atlantis" and "Battlestar Galactica," which all kick off new seasons. The guys, however, seem kinda interchangable. There's even a joke on "Stargate" about how the new team member Ben Browder ("Farscape" alum) looks like Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson). They do look alike. That's not a problem with Claudia Black (Browder's "Farscape" alum), who plays sexy (and she is) and Amanda Tapping, who always hints at something fiery beneath her military reserve. And has the exotic-looking Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) on "Atlantis" ever covered her midriff? But "Battlestar's" top gun "Starbuck" (Katee Sackhoff), with her muscle; the secret Cylon Sharon (Grace Park), with her passion; and the seductive Six (Tricia Helfer), always in something provocative, are frakking (you know what that means if you watch the show) cool. And the shows, starting at 8 p.m. and repeated starting at 11 p.m., are pretty good, too.

Early reports coming out of the Creation Official Stargate Convention in Burbank, CA have indicated that SciFi Channel has requested that the opening credits for both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis be completely slashed down to a mere *10* seconds, leaving out all actor credits (until, one presumes, they are simply shown over the opening action of the episode itself). This means no more soaring theme music. No introduction of the main characters and actors on SG-1. Producer Joe Mallozzi confirmed elsewhere on the web that this was true and had been done by the request of The SciFi Channel. He also confirmed that the show itself would remain the same length -- in other words, more commercials would be inserted in place of the openings. Fan reaction so far has been stunned disbelief -- and anger.

Gearing up for the new seasons of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the Chicago Tribune has interviewed some of the actors from both series: Ben Browder (Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell), Gary Jones (Walter Harriman), David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) and Claudia Black (Vala). Go here to read them all!

The North Carolina Journal has published an online article about the new Stargate SG-1 season (with a brief mention of the new season of Stargate Atlantis, as well):
At first glance, it may seem as if Sci Fi Channel's TV shows are starting to run together, because two stars of the network's canceled Farscape - Ben Browder and Claudia Black - are joining the cast of SG-1 ...
Browder - who grew up in Charlotte - plays Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, the newly assigned leader of the Stargate project's SG-1 exploration team. Black reprises her guest role from a Stargate episode last season as Vala Mal Doran, an opportunistic alien whose path crosses with that of the Stargate team.
Browder's character is similar to John Crichton, the character he played on Farscape - heroic, a bit befuddled, with a wry sense of humor.
Black, however, is playing a far different character than before. Her Farscape character, Aeryn Sun, was a stern and noble warrior woman. Vala Mal Doran, by contrast, is a flirtatious, devious con artist. She intrudes in the activities of the Stargate team partly because she wants to use their skills to her own ends, but also because she has a thing for head scientist Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks).
Browder replaces Richard Dean Anderson, who had played the Stargate team leader since the TV series made its debut on the Showtime network in 1997. Anderson makes a cameo appearance in the season premiere, symbolically passing the baton to Browder. The two-part season premiere, "Avalon," involves a discovery that may connect the stargates to Arthurian mythology.
