The North Carolina Journal has published an online article about the new Stargate SG-1 season (with a brief mention of the new season of Stargate Atlantis, as well):
At first glance, it may seem as if Sci Fi Channel's TV shows are starting to run together, because two stars of the network's canceled Farscape - Ben Browder and Claudia Black - are joining the cast of SG-1 ...
Browder - who grew up in Charlotte - plays Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, the newly assigned leader of the Stargate project's SG-1 exploration team. Black reprises her guest role from a Stargate episode last season as Vala Mal Doran, an opportunistic alien whose path crosses with that of the Stargate team.
Browder's character is similar to John Crichton, the character he played on Farscape - heroic, a bit befuddled, with a wry sense of humor.
Black, however, is playing a far different character than before. Her Farscape character, Aeryn Sun, was a stern and noble warrior woman. Vala Mal Doran, by contrast, is a flirtatious, devious con artist. She intrudes in the activities of the Stargate team partly because she wants to use their skills to her own ends, but also because she has a thing for head scientist Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks).
Browder replaces Richard Dean Anderson, who had played the Stargate team leader since the TV series made its debut on the Showtime network in 1997. Anderson makes a cameo appearance in the season premiere, symbolically passing the baton to Browder. The two-part season premiere, "Avalon," involves a discovery that may connect the stargates to Arthurian mythology.
